Acharya Bhadrabahu, the spiritual Guru of Chandragupt Mourya, the fisrt emperor of India, took sallekhana at this place. According to Jain lierary evidences, Acharya Bhadrabahu, Emperor Chadragupt Maurya and thousands of Jain monks migrated to southern part of India. Shravanabelogola became there center of religious activities.
